Sir,
I am directed by the Board of Trade to refer to previous correspondence concerning the application of the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1906, to lascars and other native seamen serving on British ships, and to atate that they have had under consideration the further question of affording information, as to the circumstances of the death and possible claim to compensation under the Act, to the relatives and dependents of any such seaman who may have met with a fatal accident on board.
It is at present the practice of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen to publish and circulate for the information of officers dealing with Merchant Shipping business, end of relatives, and others a monthly return of the deaths of seamen serving in British ships. These returns are largely used by foreign consuls in Lon- don for tracing and reporting deaths of seamen in whom they are interested. A copy of this return is enclosed for the information of the Secretary of State.
The Board think that the return might be utilised in connection with claims under the Workmen's Compensa- tion Act when Asiatics have met with fatal accidents on British ships. Copies of this return could be sent each
